Patrolled beaches include Cronulla Beach, North Cronulla Beach, Eloura Beach and Wanda Beach. There are also over 15 non-patrolled beaches in the Sutherland Shire.
For those looking for something a little more secure, there are eight rock pools and netted baths within the Shire including Silver Beach, Cronulla Rock Pool, Shelly Park Rock Pool, Oak Park Rock Pool, Gunnamatta Bay Tidal Baths, Lilli Pilli Baths, Gymea Bay Baths and Como Tidal Baths.
And if you're into a bit of modern Australia history, to the left of Captain Cook Bridge is the site of Lieutenant James Cook's first landing in Australia, on the southern banks of Botany Bay.
Surfing & Fishing
When it comes to surf breaks in Sydney, the beaches of Bate Bay (Cronulla) provide arguably the most variety and best quality of any other single stretch of coastline. From north to south there are in excess of 24 surf breaks catering for a variety of surfing abilities. From soft easy beach breaks to world class waves at Shark Island and Voodoo this stretch of coastline has it all.
Key surfing spots include Voodoo, The Alley, Cronulla Point, Shark Island, Sandshoes/Oak Park, The Wall, Green Hills and Windy Point/Shelly Beach.
The Sutherland Shire is blessed with ocean and river waterways, perfect for dropping a line. Botany Bay, Port Hacking, Cronulla Beach and surrounding waterways provide a wide range of fishing opportunities from beach or jetty fishing to the more adventurous rock and boat fishing.
You'll also discover many well located boat ramps and wharves available for public use.
Walking Trails & Bike Trails
Bordered by 200 kilometres of waterways, 11 kilometres of beaches and 160 kilometres of bush, why not take in the beauty of the Sutherland Shire by foot?
Some of the popular trails include Cronulla Beach Walk (4km - easy difficulty), Karloo Track to Karloo Pool (3km - moderate diffuculty), Como Heritage Trail (4.2km - easy difficulty), Jibbon Loop Track (5km - easy difficulty), Burrrawang Walk (1.2km - easy difficulty) and Lake Toolooma Trail (5km - challenging difficulty).
Sutherland Shire contains a wealth of cycling opportunities for all levels of bike riding abilities. The network of on- and off-road cycleways and bike trails is growing steadily as part of the Sutherland Shire Council's Cycleway Network Plan.
These new and integrated cycleways will help us to travel more quickly, easily and safely by bike to our town centres, railway stations, work, schools and parks, while helping to improve our environment and general health and well being.
